摘要

A case is given for the use of prestressed concrete in the construction of containment vessels for LNG carriers. The ability of a prestressed concrete structure to satisfy all design parameters related to the storage of LNG has been proven in a number of land-based applications, and its adaptability for ship or barge use presents no technical problems. An example of a 15,000 meter cubed LNG barge is presented, with various design parameters and the construction procedure discussed. The advantages of using prestressed concrete for barge hulls and secondary barriers for cryogenic materials are explained, including design and construction consideration. The authors believe that with a savings of up to 25% in time and construction cost, and with improved performance characteristics of prestressed concrete over other materials, a major effort should be made by industry to bring such vessels into full realization.
