[Relationship between physical activity and sleep quality in some university students of 6 provinces in 2022: The mediating role of perceived stress and the moderating role of gender].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship among physical activity(PA), perceived stress, gender, and sleep quality of university students. METHODS: A total of 2338(925 male and 1413 female) university students of economics, management, education and science from one comprehensive undergraduate university in Guizhou, Shaanxi, Shandong, Hubei, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces were selected by convenient sampling method from October to December 2022. International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and Perceived Stress Scale were used to conduct a questionnaire survey of university students, and Bootstrap sampling test was used to conduct moderated mediation effect analysis. RESULTS: The average age of the respondents was 19.25. The first to fourth grades have 732, 769, 462 and 375 students, respectively. PA was negatively correlated with sleep quality(r=-0.103, P<0.01), and perceived stress was positively correlated with sleep quality(r=0.215, P<0.01). Bootstrap test indicated that perceived stress played a mediating role between PA and sleep quality. The direct effect of PA on sleep quality of university students was-0.06. The mediating effect of perceived stress was-0.02, accounted for 27.63% of the total effect. The interaction term of perceived stress and gender had a statistically significant effect on the prediction of sleep quality(β=-0.05, P<0.05), and gender played a moderating role in the prediction of sleep quality. The simple slope showed that with the increase of perceived stress, the sleep quality scores of males(β=0.30, P<0.01) and females(β=0.20, P<0.01) showed a significant upward trend, and the upward trend of males was more significant. CONCLUSION: The total amount of PA is related to better sleep quality. PA can improve the sleep quality of university students through the mediating effect of perceived stress and the moderating effect of gender.
