Chapter 6 aims to understand China–Kazakhstan and China–Pakistan relations through an examination of the historical background to diplomatic affairs between China and the two countries. The chapter illustrates the importance of Kazakhstan in connecting Europe and Asia. Kazakhstan has hoped to transform BRI-supported projects to its geopolitical economic advantage, thereby facilitating the country’s merger into the global logistic system. An account of studies on the Belt-Road Initiative (BRI), conducted by one of Pakistan’s ambassadors to China, indicated that the Initiative would be conducive to the revitalization of Pakistan’s economy via the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor, by improving infrastructure, upgrading energy facilities and creating job opportunities. This perspective is, however, challenged by the final text of the chapter which explores local perspectives on China’s BRI, revealing the slow progress in implementing BRI projects.
