PARAMYOSIN FILAMENTS IN AMPHIOXUS

Using mechanical distintegration, we found that paramyosin filaments with periodic striations of 14～14.5nm and 7nm were present in the preparations of muscle filaments of amphioxus (Branchiostoma belcheri, tsing-taoensis), an animal belonging to the nearest subphylum to the Vertebrata. The diameter of these paramyosin filaments were shown to be grouped around 25, 55 and 100nm. The length of these filaments may be over 700nm. Treatment of a homogenate of amphioxus with bovine trypsin without stirring, revealed that paramyosin filaments are made up of subfilaments with a diameter of 2.0～2.5nm.
