English law in the global LNG business: international LNG sale and purchase—a relational arrangement†

In recent years, a number of cases have called on the courts of England and Wales to consider the nature and significance of relational contracts and the expectations of their parties. As well as seeking to identify the characteristics of relational contracts, the courts have also had cause to consider related matters such as good faith and the interpretation or implication of terms in respect of relational contracts. This article looks to review these developments and to apply recent jurisprudence to the changing circumstances of one of the established contracts of the international oil and gas business: the long-term agreement for the international sale and purchase of liquefied natural gas.
