Chapter 10 highlights Negri's enjoyment of her luxurious and opulent life as a famous Paramount movie star. Although happy on the surface, Negri feels unsatisfied professionally with the characters she plays in such movies as Spanish Dancer, Shadow of Paris, Men, and Lily of the Dust. The roles actresses find themselves in at the time reflect a broader social ideal in the early 1920s: morally lacking female characters either repent by the end of the movie, or they die. Negri is not comfortable playing women who are vain, fickle, and ultimately unable to take care of themselves, since they are the exact opposite of everything she embodies and believes in. Working with the director Dmitri Buchowetzki brought greater success for Negri.
