The future of China's LNG industry-health,order and diversity

As an emerging LNG consumer, China faces grave challenges in the new seller-dominated international energy market: rising LNG prices and limited available resources; an underdeveloped domestic natural gas market with limited price bearing capacity; a natural gas utilization structure in urgent need of adjustment; weak pipeline networks and infrastructures; and rising transport costs for LNG. Based on analyses and projections of the domestic and international LNG development environment, the authors propose a rational development orientation for China's LNG industry: Rational planning and well-ordered construction of LNG terminals and storage tanks; continuing diversification the LNG supply; connection of coastal trunk lines and cross-border pipelines with the main national pipeline network, creating a secure and stable gas supply; gradually optimization of the consumption structure in step with the gradual maturation of the LNG market; use of the LNG industry to drive development in related sectors; establishment of a rational market pricing system in order to achieve the long-term development goal of a market-based natural gas industry.
