Influence of Marangoni flow on the melting process

摘要

The solid-liquid phase change problem was modeled numencally using the quasi-steady state method with the consideration of conduction, natural convection and Marangoni flow induced by surface tension gradient. The calculated results show that when the free surface is present, the Marangoni flow driven by the surface tension gradient resulting from the temperature difference has a significant effect on the melting process, especially on the movement of the solid-liquid interface. Gravity has little effect on the flow field. These resutls provide guidance on how to explore melting phenomena in a microgravity environment, such as in the space shuttle, using terrestrial numerical simulations or experiments.
