Shikumen Residences Reveal Shanghai's Past

A product that combines construction and culture, with both Western and Chinese architecture, shikumen has left its mark on China's modern architectural history. Prevalent in the 1920s, shikumen residences were the result of urban life. The shikumen style once composed three-fourths of Shanghai's local residences, and bred the spirit of Shanghai's middle class. Now, shikumen has become an important part of Shanghai's culture. Through shikumen, people know about Shanghai-both its past and the present.
