摘要

An analysis is given of the secondary time effects.Based on his three dimensional theory of the consolidation and flow of clay layers the writer has obtained some mathematical solutions for the pore-water pressure and the settlement in laterally confined samples.According to the solutions obtained the water pressure and settlement are always larger than predicted from Terzaghi's theory. The calculations show that the secondary compression after the hydrodynamic period is likely to increase linearly with the logarithm of the time,as pointed out by Buisman.Hereafter a gradual transition to the ultimate settlement follows, which may be 1 to 3 times the maximal set- tlement after Terzaghi. It is shown by examples that the cases from“low secondary compression”to “high secondary compression”can be predicted by means of the mathematical expressions obtained, supposing that hardening effects are negligible. The physical aspects underlying the mathematical treatment of the problem of consolidation and secondary time effects are discussed, and rheological models are presented.
