A Novel Design of Air Cleaner for Motorcycles

In this study, a novel design of air cleaner used in motorcycles is proposed in order to increase the amount of dust captured by the air cleaner. A baffle is added inside the air cleaner to direct the path of airflow through it and enhance the capture efficiency of suspension particles and dusts in the collecting chamber. A theoretical model is developed for the system and solved by the CFD package (i.e. Fluent) including both cases with and without the baffle under direct and lateral intake conditions, respectively. The numerical results are compared with experimental measurements. It is found that the numerical predictions of flow rate are in excellent agreement with experiments in all cases, which indicates that the variations of flow rate caused by the pressure differences can be predicted correctly by the developed theoretical model. The attached baffle produces limited influence on the flow rate only and improves the capture efficiency of dusts significantly in the experiments. The results show that such a novel design to add an extra baffle in the air cleaner can effectively reduce the amount of dusts attached to the filter and lengthen its service life while not affect the intake efficiency at all.
