Radiographically Guided Percutaneous Catheter Drainage of Empyemas

Nine patients with loculated empyemas receiving image-guided percutaneous catheter drainage over a one-year period were analysed. In 8 patients, image-guided percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) was the primary treatment method; in one it was used after incomplete chest tube drainage. Drainage was performed with fluoroscopic guidance in all patients. Eight cases had successful PCD for empyemas. Only one case failed due to improper tube position. No major complications were encountered. In conclusion, with proper catheter placement, radiologically guided percutaneous catheter drainage should be safe and effective in treatment of empyemas.
