摘要

In this essay, I borrow the concept of ”illness as metaphor” in presenting a case study of Zeng Yi (1852-1927), a late Qing woman poet, physician, reformer, and advocate of women's education. By examining the multiple identities she assumed, as well as the complexities that arose as she agilely shifted between these identities, I intend to look into the larger question of how changes in thinking about ”illness as metaphor” during the late Qing initiated a reconceptualization of women and illness and, further, led to changes in the ”cainu” (talented female) identity.
