Goblet Cell Carcinoid of the Jejunum

Goblet cell carcinoid (adenocarcinoid tumor) is a rare tumor with mixed features of adenocarcinoma and carcinoid. Diagnosis is usually based on histological findings after surgical resection. The appendix is most commonly involved, with only a few cases reported in other organs. We report a patient with jejunal goblet cell carcinoid who presented with gastrointestinal obstruction and weight loss. Imaging suggested jejunal obstruction. Surgery revealed a tumor in the proximal jejunum invading the mesentery. The preliminary diagnosis on frozen section was adenocarcinoma. Because the tumor was unresectable, a bypass was performed. Formal pathology examination including immunohistochemical staining demonstrated a goblet cell carcinoid. The patient was treated with chemotherapy and was doing well at least one year after surgery.
