A COMPARISON OF THE COLLISION RESISTANCE OF MEMBRANE TANK-TYPE AND SPHERICAL TANK-TYPE LNG TANKERS
摘要
In this comparison of the resistance of two 125,000-m/sup 3/ LNG carriers having either rectangular membrane or Moss-type spherical tanks, the striking vessel in the hypothetical collision is a 280,000-ton tanker with a 33-ft radius plumb cylindrical bow. The comparison uses the Rosenblatt method of analysis, which sums the elastic and plastic deformation energies of the various structural components and is applicable up to the point of rupture. The analysis found the membrane-type ship clearly superior in terms of (1) its ability to absorb collision energy and (2) the penetration at which rupture would occur.
