Intelligent Network (IN) standards are evolving in ITU-T to support today's as well as tomorrow's services with a flexibility not available with existing networks. The main impetus for IN is its ability to assure service transparency in a multi-vendor environment and, at the same time, to provide a flexible platform for network providers to create and introduce new services quickly and easily. The IN standards activity in ITU-T is based on a service-driven approach and the main objective is to ensure that the standards developed today are easily evolvable to address future services and network capabilities. ITU-T completed Capability Set -1 (CS-1) in 1992 which is a subset of IN capabilities and addresses the near-term requirements of both manufacturers and network operators. Currently, ITU-T Study Group (SG) 11 is addressing the issue of refinements to CS-1 to ensure multivendor interoperablity. SG 11 plans to complete CS-1 refinement work by September 1994 in order to approve the revised CS-1 Recommendation in early '95. ETSI SPS-3 recently completed the Core INAP draft standard which addresses some of the refinement issues. ETSI Core INAP is under consideration in ITU-T to augment CS-1 INAP. In North America, Bellcore has developed AIN 0.1/0.2 Generic Requirements which are functionally a subset of CS-1. SG 11 is also developing CS-2 Recommendation and plans to complete CS-2 work by April 1995 in order to approve the CS-2 Recommendation in 2nd half of '95. This presentation reviews the current ITU-T standards and regional requirements, identifies CS-1 refinement issues, and examines the scope and content of CS-2.
