Characteristics and consequences of amphetamine—type stimulants abuse in China

Characteristics and consequences of amphetamine-type stimulants(ATS) abuse was surveyed in 15 areas in nationwide from February 2001 to January 2002.A structured questionnaire that included the drug history,patterns,reasons and consequences with using ATS was used in this study.A total of 1 404 urine testing positive subjects participated in this study.The results suggested that most ATS users(65.2%) were male,who did not attend college and typically were unemployed or self-employed.Subjects mean age was 28.2±6.3 years.The categories of abused ATS included of MDMA (ecstasy),methamphetamine(ice) and ephedrine.The main reason for initial ATS use was “satisfaction of curiosity” and main reason for continued use was “enjoyment of effects”.“Chasing dragon” and swallowing were most common initial two routes of administration,and injecting route was increasing after initial phase.Main place of ATS use was at recreation setting.The symptoms of irritability,depression,hallucinations,mania,aggression and delusions have found as ATS intoxication among some subjects.
